"No longer must hospitals be fixed at one location:
technological advances have allowed them to take to the roads,
seas, and skies. Mobile hospital platforms are effective at
providing healthcare to populations far removed from established
hospitals, and are unmatched in their ability to rapidly respond
to disasters. Weight and space restrictions inherent in these
facilities add challenges to the design of mobile hospitals, but
there exist a number of strategies that can be used to overcome
these obstacles.
Ground transportation provides a particularly practical platform
for mobile hospitals. A truck can travel much faster than a
ship, and is more economical than an aircraft. Bus or
truck-based facilities have served a variety of roles, from
small eye hospitals in India to multi-semi-trailer systems
deployed in the United States during floods. They have been
successfully utilized as part of an early response to disasters,
especially in areas not served by existing hospitals...”
