Excerpt from
article: "In recent years, the fields of radiology and
design for radiology have undergone numerous changes due to
groundbreaking advances in technology,. The most important and
generative technological advance has been the development of
digital imaging and PACS (picture archiving and communication
systems), the increasingly prevalent digital image storing and
distribution system for hospital and private practice networks.
The invention and
adoption of this filmless technology has generated a dramatic
restructuring of the in-hospital radiology department or
off-site free-standing
outpatient radiology facility. This technology-driven
restructuring has allowed radiology architects to rethink the
radiology environment from the point of view of patients,
radiologist and staff, with the general goals of radiology
facilities which increase patient and staff comfort, patient
privacy, staff safety, and greater efficiency, speed, and
through-put in the radiology workflow...”
