Excerpt from article:
"Today’s clinical emergency departments (ED’s) face a host of
challenges. Increases in catchment area populations are
straining facility capacity. Contributing to the problem,
non-emergent patients are increasingly coming to emergency care
facilities for primary care. Changing patient demographics are
forcing ED’s to remain flexible and maintain the capacity to
deal with unforeseen situations. All the while, ED’s must deal
with inherently unpredictable patient influx patterns and
today’s economic climate. These factors have led to a situation
where the majority of ED’s are operating at or over capacity,
some dangerously so. As a result, new facilities are being
planned, and existing operations are looking to renovate or
expand their emergency care departments. These efforts must
include the necessary design considerations, however, to
maximize departmental efficiency and quality of care....”
