Bernstein / Matzelle Elder Care Facilities Design:

One of the firm’s divisions -- Bernstein / Matzelle Elder Care Facilities Design -- provides comprehensive architectural services for elder care institutions such as skilled nursing homes, assisted living, Alzheimer's/dementia facilities, and independent living facilities.

Combining Mr. Matzelle’s over forty years of experience designing elder care facilities, with our own expertise in architectural services, has enabled us to create a full-service firm which addresses the needs of both facility owners and residents.

Current concepts for elder care design, supported by our firm, include the following:

-   Facilities which complement the architecture of existing neighborhoods of homes and businesses
-   Residents' rooms designed for maximum safety and manageability

-
Neighborhood clusters that share family rooms and dining spaces
-
Living and dining spaces residentially-scaled to feel like home
-
The discreet use of technology as a significant design feature
-
Cluster concept to reduce maximum travel distance
-
Courtyard extensions of internal wandering loops for residents with dementia
-
Facilitate  socialization and create  increased opportunities for small gatherings
-
Ability of residents to age in place
-
A private dining room where residents may visit with their families in a more personal atmosphere
-
An exterior porch wraps the front of the building permitting residents to gather outside, under shelter from direct sun or rain
-
Cove lighting to provide consistent, nonglare illumination
-
Ability of residents to furnish and decorate their private alcoves or one-bedroom suites any way they like with their own personal belongings
-
Ability to relax in front of a fireplace in a comfortable living room
-
Ability to sip coffee on the outdoor terrace
-
Facilitate socialization with neighbors in activity rooms
-
Seating alcoves along passages to provide spaces for impromptu gathering, rest and decoration
-
Resident entries with recessed doorways and niches that allow individualization by resident
-
A continuum of care within a single structure or in a campus setting
-
"Neighborhoods" areas that allow staff to encourage residents to meet on a daily basis in common areas for activities such as
baking snacks, listening to music or singing

-
A welcoming and homelike atmosphere for its residents
-
A village concept to reduce the scale of the facility and to provide a residential flavor to the facility
