"As biotechnology, nanotechnology, and a host of other “technologies” have exploded, so has the need for industrial, research, and academic laboratories. The traditional methods of delivering laboratory facilities—design by an architect, receiving bids, and constructing the facility—have been stretched. Industries such as pharmaceuticals require new labs to be brought on line in months. Due to the nature of their grant funding, even laboratories in the public sector need to be designed and constructed in shorter time frames than ever before. In general, the design/bid/build approach won’t accommodate this rapid a schedule. A different model is required..."

"Collaborative Laboratory Building Goes Platinum", (c) John Muir Institute of the Environment, July, 07

"The U.S. Green Building Council has awarded a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certification for the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences building. The building is one of only 26 facilities (and one of three laboratories) in the world to have earned the highest tier of recognition possible for energy- and environmental-design excellence under the LEED program for New Construction (LEED-NC) and the first building in Nevada to earn this recognition..."

Lab Experience :

Within the past sixteen years, *Bernstein & Assoc., Architects, PLLC*  has completed numerous : pharmaceutical laboratories; biochemistry and biotechnology laboratories; clean rooms; pilot plants; blood processing laboratories; medical device manufacturing facilities; a neurobiology research facility; Biosafety Level-3 laboratories;  molecular immunology laboratories; and a plant biology laboratory.

Lab Publications and Awards :

Our laboratory projects have won design awards from Progressive Architecture, and Architectural Record, and have been published in Advance, Bio/Technology, Progressive Architecture, Architectural Record, and Design Solutions.
