Not necessarily. Foulkeways at Gwynedd, a continuing care retirement community in Gwynedd, PA, underwent a complete overhaul of its 40 skilled nursing beds in 2001.  “We’re the only skilled facility in the United States with walk-in closets,” executive director Douglas A. "When Catholic Health Services, Buffalo, N.Y., closed Our Lady of Victory Hospital in nearby Lackawanna in 1999, health system management promised to find a new life for the 1919 building. Aimee Gomlak Brace, vice president of strategic redevelopment at the system, had to find a use that would fit with the system’s mission and be financially self-sustaining. She considered office space and classrooms, among other uses, but settled on housing for low- and moderate-income seniors..."

"When Dick Harris retired 16 years ago, he and his wife, Lynne, moved first to Sarasota, Fla., and then to a sprawling retirement community 45 minutes from Chicago. Now the couple expect to adopt a different kind of senior lifestyle: they plan to move next year to the Clare at Water Tower, a luxury high-rise under construction in the Gold Coast neighborhood of Chicago.  He and his wife will be able to walk to the Art Institute, to the symphony and to church. 'If you stay active and involved, you can add years to your life,' Mr. Harris said. 'Lynne and I both feel this is a healthy way to age.'..."
